The rule
How GPA is calculated in Bangladesh
Every subject earns a grade point: A+ is 5, A is 4, A- is 3.5, B is 3, C is 2, D is 1 and F is 0. Your GPA is the average of those points across the compulsory subjects. The fourth (optional) subject is treated differently — only the points above 2 are added to your total, and it never drags the average down. A single F in any compulsory subject makes the result fail, whatever the other grades are.
The fourth subject
Only the points above 2 count. An A+ in the optional subject adds 3 points to your total; an A adds 2; a C or below adds nothing. The divisor never changes, which is why the optional subject can lift a GPA but never lower it.
Golden GPA 5
A GPA of 5.00 where every subject is A+, not just the average. The boards do not print the word "golden" — it is what everyone calls the stricter version of a perfect result.
One F ends it
A failing grade in any compulsory subject fails the result outright. No GPA is published, whatever the other grades say.

About the calculation
What is a fourth subject and how does it count?
Points above 2 from the optional subject are added to the total before the average is taken. Score A+ in it and 3 extra points join your total; score C or below and it adds nothing.
What is a Golden GPA 5?
An unofficial name for GPA 5.00 where every single subject is A+, not just the average. It is a stricter result than plain GPA 5.
Does an F affect my GPA?
Yes — an F in any compulsory subject means the overall result is failed and no GPA is published, regardless of the other grades.
Are SSC and HSC calculated the same way?
The grade points and the optional subject rule are identical. Only the subject list differs between the two exams.
